We are currently staying at the Canopy Tower in Panama, about 30 minutes from Panama City on the way to Gamboa. It is an old radar tower built by the U.S. to monitor the Panamanian Canal (yes, you can watch boats from the rooftop observation deck). This afternoon we had a big tropical rainstorm with a little added excitement - the tower was hit by lightning (three cheers for lightning rods) and a tree right beside it was hit by another strike and caught fire (which quickly went out with the rain). Terrifying to say the least. Less than an hour later we went out birding and saw 52 species πππ
