White-topped Pitcher Plant blossoms |
Happy Leap Day! Today’s adventures took us to Clear Creek Nature Trail, just NE of Pensacola on the perimeter of Whiting Field Naval Air Station. We hiked (walked) in 3/4 mile to a boardwalk through a bog where we found lots of White-topped Pitcher Plants and a Cottonmouth Snake… The first we were excited about and the latter we were both ignorant about and glad it was 6 ft. below the boardwalk. It wasn’t until we got to the car that I looked online to find out it was a very venomous snake. 😬

On the way out we were greeted with the reverie and Star-spangled Banner broadcast from the base - a bit surreal hiking through the woods to military music from a loud speaker. The rest of the day was uneventful, except that we drove from Florida through Alabama and Mississippi to Louisiana - about 327 miles.
