Gulls, gulls and more gulls

There are at least 5 species of birds in this photo - a good illustration of why it is crucial to be able to
identify gulls when doing a Big Year! (click on it to expand it)

One of the obstacles that I realize I will have to overcome to reach 500 species, is identifying the more common birds that look alike - little brown birds and sea gulls come to mind.  I'll save the LBB's for later and illustrate the sea gull conundrum for now.  Here are some Laughing Gulls at Coney Island:

Clearly my only hope is to just take a lot of pictures and study them at home.  Gulls will definitely slow me down.

This is the largest species of gull in the world - about 2 1/2 feet in length
which is about 6 iniches longer than the most common gull in the Seattle area.

That black gull is the Heerman's Gull - he will be white when he matures.

This is one of the most common gulls in the Seattle area.
