Today was our longest day diving - 175 miles. There are several birds that only live along this portion of the Rio Grande River. Sadly we did not find any of them. We did however stumble upon an interesting small town called San Ygnacio. The town, 2021 population of 654, was founded in 1830 and is a pseudo-ghost town. Many of the original buildings are still standing (unoccupied) and those that are occupied look like bohemian artist shacks. There was a poetry reading “festival” happening in the town plaza and some young vigilantes dressed in camo patrolling the dusty dirt road next to the river. Such a weird dichotomy.
Laredo is town of semi-trucks, chain stores and Border Patrol. It’s hot and dusty and there isn't lot of green. Either I’m exhausted from birding or there isn't anything interesting to see here.
