Seattle to Monterey - February 2022 (pt. 2)

#103 Sandhill Cranes
Vancouver, Washington

It’s geese, duck and crane migration. We purposely planned to be in Vancouver, WA at sunrise to see the cranes.  It was a bit awe inspiring to stand next to the Columbia River at dawn as hundreds of cranes flew overhead from their night roost on the other side of the river to the field where they feed.  Not only are they very big (5-7 ft. wingspan), but they are very noisy. All three of these geese (Greater White-fronted, Snow, and Ross’s) nest in the Arctic, so they will be leaving soon to fly north.

Some sort of Sandhill Crane display -
look at how long their wings are!
